  • 💰 Selling or giving away - Prepare device for new owner
  • 🐛 Persistent software issues - Fix crashes, freezes, or bugs
  • 🔄 Starting fresh - Clean slate without old data

  • 🔐 Compromised device - After security breach

Before You Begin: Backup Checklist

✅ Pre-Reset Checklist

  • Back up to iCloud or computer
  • Export important photos separately
  • Save any files from apps (documents, notes, etc.)
  • Write down passwords (if not using password manager)
  • Disable Find My iPhone (required for reset)
  • Remove SIM card (if selling/giving away)
  • Unpair Apple Watch (if you have one)
  • Sign out of iCloud
  • Charge battery to at least 50%

Step 1: Back Up Your iPhone

💡 Two Backup Methods

You can back up to iCloud (wireless) or to a computer (wired). iCloud is easier but limited by storage. Computer backups are unlimited but require a Mac or PC.

Option A: iCloud Backup (Wireless)

1 Connect to WiFi and Power

Connect to WiFi and plug in your iPhone to charge.

2 Start iCloud Backup

Go to Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup

Tap "Back Up Now"

Wait for backup to complete (can take 30 minutes to several hours depending on data size)

3 Verify Backup Completed

Check that backup finished successfully. You'll see the date and time of last backup.

Option B: Computer Backup (Wired)

1 Connect iPhone to Computer

Mac (macOS Catalina or later): Open Finder

Mac (older) or Windows: Open iTunes

Connect your iPhone with a cable.

2 Start Backup

Select your iPhone in Finder/iTunes

Click "Back Up Now"

Recommended: Check "Encrypt local backup" to save passwords and Health data

3 Wait for Backup to Complete

Don't disconnect until backup is finished.

Step 2: Prepare for Reset

1 Disable Find My iPhone

Go to Settings → [Your Name] → Find My → Find My iPhone

Turn OFF Find My iPhone

Enter your Apple ID password when prompted

2 Sign Out of iCloud (Optional but Recommended)

Go to Settings → [Your Name] → Sign Out

Enter your Apple ID password

Choose whether to keep a copy of data on this iPhone (doesn't matter since you're erasing)

⚠️ Important: Activation Lock

You MUST disable Find My iPhone before resetting. If you don't, the phone will be Activation Locked and unusable after reset (even by you). This is an anti-theft feature.

Step 3: Factory Reset Your iPhone

1 Open Transfer or Reset iPhone

Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone

2 Tap "Erase All Content and Settings"

Tap "Erase All Content and Settings"

This is the nuclear option - everything will be deleted.

3 Confirm Erase

Read the warning and tap "Continue"

Enter your passcode when prompted

Enter your Apple ID password to disable Activation Lock

4 Wait for Erase to Complete

Your iPhone will erase all data and restart. This takes 5-15 minutes.

Don't turn off or disconnect your iPhone during this process.

✅ Factory Reset Complete!

Your iPhone is now completely erased and will show the "Hello" welcome screen, just like when it was new.

Step 4: Set Up Your iPhone

Option A: Set Up as New iPhone

Choose this if:

  • You're removing spyware (don't restore from backup that may contain spyware)
  • You want a completely fresh start
  • You're selling/giving away the phone

Follow the on-screen setup and choose "Set Up as New iPhone"

Option B: Restore from Backup

Choose this if:

  • You're fixing software issues (not spyware)
  • You want all your data back
  • You're upgrading to a new iPhone

Follow the on-screen setup and choose "Restore from iCloud Backup" or "Restore from Computer"

⚠️ Spyware Warning

If you're removing spyware, DO NOT restore from backup. The spyware may be in your backup and will reinstall. Set up as new and manually reinstall apps.

After Reset: Security Checklist

✅ Post-Reset Security Setup

  • Set a strong alphanumeric passcode
  • Enable Face ID
  • Turn on Find My iPhone
  • Enable Advanced Data Protection
  • Configure privacy settings
  • Disable 2G networks
  • Install Signal for secure messaging
  • Install security apps (Norton, Bitdefender, etc.)
  • Review app permissions carefully
  • Enable Stolen Device Protection

Selling or Giving Away Your iPhone?

Additional steps to prepare for new owner:

  1. ✅ Factory reset completed
  2. ✅ Find My iPhone disabled
  3. ✅ Signed out of iCloud
  4. ✅ Remove SIM card
  5. ✅ Remove from your Apple ID devices list
  6. ✅ Contact carrier to unlock (if applicable)
  7. ✅ Clean the phone physically

Troubleshooting

Q: I can't disable Find My iPhone - it asks for a password I don't know

A: You need the Apple ID password that's signed in. If you forgot it:

  • Go to iforgot.apple.com to reset your password
  • Or contact Apple Support for help

Q: The erase is taking forever

A: Normal erase takes 5-15 minutes. If it's been over 30 minutes, try force restarting:

  • Press Volume Up, release
  • Press Volume Down, release
  • Press and hold Side button until Apple logo appears

Q: I'm stuck on Activation Lock after reset

A: This means Find My wasn't disabled before reset. You need the original Apple ID and password to unlock. Contact Apple Support if you can't remember.

Q: Should I restore from backup if I had spyware?

A: NO. Set up as new. Spyware may be in your backup and will reinstall. Manually reinstall apps and import photos/files separately.

Q: Can I recover data after factory reset?

A: No. Factory reset permanently deletes everything. This is why backup is critical.

💡 Alternative: DFU Mode Restore

For stubborn issues or if normal reset doesn't work, you can do a DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode restore. This is the deepest level of restore:

  1. Connect iPhone to computer
  2. Open Finder (Mac) or iTunes (Windows)
  3. Press Volume Up, release
  4. Press Volume Down, release
  5. Press and hold Side button until screen goes black
  6. While holding Side, press and hold Volume Down for 5 seconds
  7. Release Side but keep holding Volume Down for 10 seconds
  8. Screen should stay black - you're in DFU mode
  9. Computer will detect iPhone in recovery mode
  10. Click "Restore" in Finder/iTunes

Note: This completely wipes and reinstalls iOS. Use only if normal reset fails.
