๐ฌ Install Signal Messenger
End-to-End Encrypted Communication
Replace SMS and WhatsApp with Signalโthe gold standard for private messaging. All messages, calls, and video chats are end-to-end encrypted. No ads, no trackers, completely free and open source.
Why This Matters
Regular SMS and most messaging apps (including WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Telegram) are vulnerable to interception. Signal uses military-grade end-to-end encryption for everythingโmessages, voice calls, video calls, and even group chats.
What makes Signal different:
- End-to-end encryption by default: Not even Signal can read your messages
- No metadata collection: Signal doesn't know who you talk to or when
- Open source: Security researchers can audit the code
- No ads, no trackers: Funded by donations, not surveillance capitalism
- Disappearing messages: Set messages to auto-delete after a timer
- Screen security: Prevents screenshots in sensitive conversations
๐ Who Uses Signal?
Signal is trusted by:
- Journalists protecting sources

Troubleshooting
โ My contacts don't show up in Signal
Signal only shows contacts who also use Signal. Invite them by:
- Tapping "Invite friends" in Signal
- Sending them a link to download Signal
- Telling them in person to install it
โ I didn't receive the verification code
- Wait 2-3 minutes (SMS can be delayed)
- Check your SMS/Messages app
- Tap "Call me instead" for voice verification
- Make sure you entered the correct phone number
โ Can I use Signal without giving it my contacts?
Yes! Deny the contacts permission. You can still message people by manually entering their phone number.
โ Is Signal really secure?
Yes. Signal's encryption protocol (the Signal Protocol) is considered the gold standard and is used by WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Google Messages. But unlike those apps, Signal doesn't collect metadata or show ads.
Next Steps
You've installed Signal, but there's more you can do:
- Invite your contacts: Signal is most useful when your friends and family use it too
- Enable disappearing messages: Set default timers for all conversations
- Set a strong PIN: Protect your device if it's lost or stolen โ Guide #7: Strong PIN (Coming Soon)
- Use Faraday bags: Block all signals when you need complete privacy โ Guide #8: Faraday Bags (Coming Soon)
๐ก๏ธ Defense in Depth
Signal protects your messages, but combine it with other security measures: NetGuard to control which apps can access the internet, PCAPdroid to monitor network traffic, and regular permission audits.
